Wood Flooring FAQs

Wood flooring is graded/priced based on a number of variations. All natural wood flooring will have characteristics such as; knots, mineral streaks (grain of the wood) and pinholes for example. Each of these characteristics are simply a result of the trees growth in the forest and are influenced by the soil, climate and sunlight.  The most expensive wood flooring is called Clear grade as it has the least number of natural characteristics. If Clear is not your style, Rustic grade may be the choice for you as it shows the highest amount of character and is still manufactured with the highest of quality.

Nail or Staple down: This style of installation has been used for centuries and is the traditional method for installing wood floors.

Direct glue down: This method requires that each tongue and grooved floor board be laid into an adhesive that is spread out onto the subfloor or a concrete slab. This style of installation is more complicated as the boards must be inserted together with adhesive, aligned and kept together when installed.

Floating: This style dates back about 35 years and requires beads of glue into the groove of each board which is then tapped into place over a foam pad. This type of installation is easy, fast and is used to counteract humidity changes as the boards will not expand and contract.

Click Loc- Floating: This is a relatively new process where the boards lock together when clicked into place. For Click Loc installations do not require glue or nails to install, yet is should be installed over a foam pad.
